VIT counselling procedure

The Vellore Institute of Technology - Beautiful campus, well-equiped classrooms and laboratories, large cafeterias, shopping areas, glossy brochures - very rude,unhelpful people- the place stunk of lavishness, including the students. We paid Rs30,000 just to attend the counselling. That was more than the entire admission fees and semester fees I paid at NITW ( Rs 27,000 app.). And this amount was forfeited, unlike in the IITs where counselling fees are returned if a student does not take admission in the IIT.

There were several hotels some distance from the campus,several eateries on and around the campus.

The counselling procedure consists of dozens of steps and procedures that included a medical check-up where we were made to do everything from getting ourselves weighed, height, vision checked, gulping down de-worming tablets, getting a picture clicked to allowing the nurses to inject needles into our arm to draw blood samples and peeing on strips of paper for god-only-knows-what purpose! A bus outside the medical centre gave prospective students and parents a tour of the campus of the classrooms,libraries etc.

It invoved a lot of moving around , the usual verification,visiting the photocopier shops, until finally we were allowed into the computer room, to select our choice of branch.Thankfully they had provided us with a flier listing the various steps. We had to follow the line according to roll no order as we were led around.And just when we seemed to be at the end of our ordeal they declared the lunch break from about 1-2.30 or 2-2.30 ,I can't remember.

There were about 5000 seats available I think but only about 60% of these got filled up at the end of the 1st round of counselling ,till VITEEE AIR of 6000. Hence invariably the next set of students, of AIR more than 6000 are given calls to come for counsellling.Courses like Bioinformatics, Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering seats though, get alloted to students almost immediately, on the first day of counselling itself.After these the computer sciences, electrical, chemical branche allotments drag on for days.I found out from some friend that even up to AIR 26,000 had got a seat in VIT.

The procedure after lunch was pretty straightforward and finally we could go back to our hotel.




BITSAT
The last exam for most students..Question are just a bit more difficult compared to AIEEE,lot simpler than IITJEE. Speed is the key for this exam.
After the initial identity verification and submission of print - out of admit form students are ushered into the computer centre. They are then each given a blank booklet on which is written the number of the computer assigned to us. This booklet is to be used for calculation and rough work.
Students are then asked to take their places in fronth of the numbered computer screens. The students has to type in their roll no. on the screen and their picture with their roll no. below appears.
Several invigilators keep moving aroung the room. Computer screens are placed as in internet cafes, so that one student cannot look into the other's screen.If there is any problem whatsoever the invigilators are always at hand to sort it out. Students then have to wait till the invigilator announces it's time to start and the BITSAT test appears on the screen. The test looks exactly like the Sample test on the official website, except it has more question ofcourse :)
Students can complete and submit their test any time , withen the 180 minutes alloted . The number of correct and wrong answers and your score will appear immediately on the screen.
You are then free to leave............a free bird............holidays for you at last...... :) :)

AIEEE counselling procedure ...

My AIEEE result was out last year on June 3rd. My AIR was 10,068. According to the information brocure online( I'd registered online for the exam) I was to attend counselling on 6th July. Off - campus counselling was to be held from June 23rd to 29th . WHile the on-campus one was to begin on July 4th for AIR 1- 5000, July 5th for AIR 5000- 10,000 and so on.


The off -campus counselling was kind of like a dress rehearsal to the main on-campus counselling.


On-Campus ie. counselling in the campus of the NIT of the state from where you gave your exam, involves waiting for your turn in a big hall, after requisite identity verifications , signing of documents selecting prioritywise a list of college and branch on the computer in the hall.


This procedure may vary from NIT to NIT but in NIT Nagpur or VNIT as its called it was like this. There was also a big sceen on which the most recent status of seats available was visible . By recent I mean the number of seats left after allocation of seats to students who attended counselling on the previous day. This seat status is available on the official website everyday as well, updated after 4pm when counselling for a certain day is done.


You should come prepared to stay the night in the counselling city, your seat allocation is displayed the next day on the counselling campus as well as on the official website. I had to then take a printout from the website of my allotment. Now remember, THE COLLEGE THAT YOU ARE NOW ALLOTED CANNOT BE CHANGED. If you want some other AIEEE college you'l have to wait for counselling next year .


Withen a certain date I was instructed to go to the NIT I waas alloted to fill my fees and take admission. Suppose you don't turn up within this time to pay your fees, your admission is cancelled. Your seat is given to somone who opted for form 2 during counselling.


So, well in the off-campus counselling, comfortably from your home (you need net connection at home ofcourse) you have to register for on-campus counselling. Then you are shown the same computer screen you will see in the counselling hall when you will punch in your final choices.You can type in your priority list( if you read my posts regularly you'd have already made this list) .


The next day the computer will tell you what college and branch you will be alloted based on your priority list. You can immediately make changes to your list , the next day the computer will again tell you which college you will be alloted based on your modified priority list. REMEMBER, THIS PRIORITY LIST IS IN NO WAY RELATED TO THE LIST YOU TYPE IN DURING ON-CAMPUS COUNSELLING. You may change your list altogether or type in the same list again during on-campus.

With soooo many colleges..sooo many branches...and your career at stake, counselling can get quite confusing.. I know a few friends who made an ill-informed decision regarding their choice of college and are now cribbing and crying at their fate.




A good college will get you the best placement available to a student of your capabilities. Or if you're planning on further studies, IITs , BITs and NITs are the few Indian universities that are well-known abroad , which will make it easier for you to get accepted in an esteemed institute or obtain that wonderful scholarship.



Hence I couldn't overemphasise how necessary it is that a student is aware of which college, which stream , in which part of the India you will be interested in..especially the girls.



In my case, my parents told me at the last minute ,the day before I was to fill my AIEEE college choices, that I shouldn't opt for NIT jaipur or calicut or kurukshetra..They were worried about my safety in the north , these places were too far away from my home in Pune. Luckily I got the branch of my choice (Biotechnology)in a good NIT (warangal)+ my parents were happy too cause I have relatives in Secunderabad,which is 2 hours from Warangal. My AIR was 10,068.



It is very necessary that you keep your options flexible...



Make a list of minimum 20 options - in order of priority .



Your columns should be 1)College



2)Stream you are interested in,in that college



3)Which part of india the college is in


Ofcourse , choosing a good college should be your priority..


But suppose you clear JEE, don't know how to draw yet take Naval architecture ,because thats the only option available to you in IIT , while you could get EEE(assume you're interested in this ) in NIT warangal, I'd say you're doomed. You'l strugle with your academics all the time, you'l get the lowest CGPA( cause you'l be one of the highest ranks in IIT), you won't be happy ..


Now if you'd taken EEE, you'd do well academically, have loads of free time for other hobbies and personality development(important too) ,you'd be happy . Like 'The Alchemist' emphasised - Our personal calling in that which "fills us with enthusiasm".. You cannot achieve success in that which you donot put your heart and soul into, or by forcing yourself to do it when you don't want to . The best part is that there is high probability that you'l get ECE(which has more market value as of now) after the sliding procedure.


Especially since this recession has increased the importance of a student knowing his/her subject matter well .Until last year student from all possible branches got sucked into the IT industry for obscenely inflated salaries. But not anymore cause the IT industry is down, its stagnating..Biotechnology is the future :)


But as I said earlier a good college is of utmost importance too. The best companies (ie the ones that are still recruiting) the best jobs will come only to the best colleges.


K.. I guess you're a lil confused, think over it, what are these 2 months holidays for anyway?

Just COMMENT!

State board or CBSE for 11th ,12th

12th board marks arn't really a priority for someone who wants to pursue engineering.Only certain minimum marks are required to be eligible for entrance exams which are ever more important , like IITJEE needs minimum 60%.To appear for BITSAT you'l need 80%..thats the highest you'l have to study for, and believe me noone will ever ask you bout your 12th marks after the initial 'how you done's,but your entrance exam ranks will decide your life..almost :)..

The syllabus for JEE, BITSAT, AIEEE and VITEEE are pretty similar , to each other and similar to the CBSE syllabus. Since board exams are not a priority ,there is an argument that students should join a state board college ,since in Maharashtra the academics are less time-consuming and easier compared to CBSE and ICSE.

I disagree though. From personal experience I can say that my CBSE high school education helped my tremendously in clearing AIEEE.If you want to focus on MHT-CET then you should go ahead with a HSC college, though why should a student aim for somthing low-gain when he might as well give a few of the most prestigious exams in the country a try.

A few more points

1) 12th HSC boards test both 11th and 12th syllabus, while CBSE tests only 12th syllabus.

2)The HSC syllabus is about 75% different from other exams. There is ample time after the other exams to brush up and learn the CET syllabus for CBSE students since JEE and AIEEE are held in April while CET is held in May.

JEE, AIEEE, BITSAT differ barelt 5% from each other . JEE is about 20% less that CBSE 11th and 12th syllabus , but has to be explored and understood far more in detail.

AIEEE syllabus is the same as CBSE.

BITSAT ans VITEEE are similar ,include a few more topics, delete a few.

So Gals and Guys, 11th and 12th are 2 very crucial years for those who want to make somthing of their lives..you have to study really really hard.
I'd said 'almost' earlier. I also know loads of people who decided 'I'm going to shut out my life, my only priority is studies'. These guys will remain cooped up indoors all day with no time-out, no resfeshment, at the same time they might not even do very well academically.
The key is to maintain a healthy balance of studies and a little physical activity and enjoyment to keep the brain fit and happy.Not too much also because remember you're investing your time and effort for wonderful rewards later in life.

What to do after 10th..

Its terrible that most people here in Pune don't have any idea about the IITs and NITs . Its particularly insulting to my effort I've put in to get to NITW when people say "What? Your studying in Warangal(after I'v explained where warangal is that is)? Did you not get admission in Pune(as though I'm some failure studying on a management quota..I've qualified AIEEE for heaven's sake),beta?" . Bharti Vidyapeeth,Pune came a distant 30-somthing according to last year's engineering college rankings.

In Andhra Pradesh JEE coaching is big business.Its a perfect example of commercialization of education. All kinds of classes have mushroomed all over the state(I'v seen only Andhra, perhaps its like this other places too perhaps not) and leading the brigade are all those Narayanas and Chaitanyas. I apologise to those might have studied in these institutions but frankly I don't approve of them , or the way students are kept locked up in their hostels ,with terrible food ,even worse living conditions..from what I'v heard from Narayana/Chaitanya ex-students or read in the newspapers. The 45K I paid for my coaching too I realize is dirt cheap, even by Pune coaching standards ..lol..the big fat recession proof education business.

Everywhere its the same actually..so I guess its up to the student to take the best out of his or her class..

What 2 do after 10th....
There was certain information I was looking for on the net, that I did not, that was first-hand info,for somone as blank as I was,about college. Hence I'l thought I'd share my story about my '13th standard' (thats what it was for me till a few years back :) and everything leading up to it..
I remember ..this same time ,3 summers back, I was fresh out of St.Mary's school with a 94.2% in the boards. I was full of confidence ,looking down upon all the lower folk who couldn't do as well as me .
Ofcourse in today's Competitive world perhaps even 99.99% is not enough for coaxing ,nagging parents,nevertheless I felt I'd achieved somthing.So now what? I was impatient for college. The Bollywood movies had painted a preety rosy picture of 'Hanging out', 'bunking' ,a wonderful perfect life complete with my knight in shining armour ..No more slogging away all night over bald revolutionaries (I meant the history textbook ;)..no more studies..I know you gals and guys must be laughing your gut out at my naiveness.For what followed...
Some one of my friends had started going to some sort of wierd classes that charged 45k for two years coaching..sheesh..which idiot would pay so much! Why I'd never really needed any most of my life. Now what was that 'it-chy' ? Sorry ..'it-gee'? Ohhh! Ok IIT -JEE ! Supposedly some elusive ,inaccessible accomplishment meant only for an elite few superhumanly intelligent students.
Bahhhh ! A piece of cake ...I've got 94.2 havn't I ?!
I decided to attend the orientation just to show the lowly being how its done ..But what I was in for that day ,I'd have never imagined..it was almost like an awakening.
With every word THE God of all things Brainy- Mr.Lalit Kumar pronounced I felt like sinking further more into the ground!It was a different experience..nothing like the bookish 'mugging' work I was used to. I felt stupid. The others students fared much better. I realized I'd been a frog in a pond all along..

What to do After B.Tech

If you prefer to continue your studies you can do Post graduate courses and then obtain a Ph.D. You have lots of options during this P.G course like M.S/ M.Tech, IAS/IPS, Navy/NDA and Finance related courses like MBA.

M.S/M.Tech:If you prefer doing P.G in your field of study, you can go for M.S/M.Tech. If you are ready to go outside India and financially sound you can prefer M.S. You need to appear for GRE/TOEFL for doing M.S in Foreign countries.

GRE: The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in English speaking countries. It is ok if you do job for sometime and start studying again for your P.G courses.

"I love cooking dogs" - CV Bloopers

"I love cookind dog", "I was responsible for dissatisfied customers", "My job is to pervert unauthorised people from coming onto site", "I have excellent poof-reading skills"... Fret not. These are only bloopers from job applicants, a new survey of CV blunders has revealed.
According to the survey, 94 per cent of job hunters risked missing out on vacancies through poor spelling, grammar or presentation on their CVs.
What's hilarious is that in some cases, applicants' attempts to impress potential employers failed through the odd missed word, with phrases such as: "I was responsible for dissatisfied customers."
For others, the omission of a single letter consigned their CV to the dustbin: "I am a pubic relations officer." And sparing use of comma led to seemingly embarrassing disclosures of equal note: "My interests include cooking dogs."
From a sample of 450 CVs, researchers found that 81 per cent were laden with spelling and grammatical errors, while nearly half were poorly laid out. A mere six per cent were error-free, the survey has found.
In fact, mistakes were not confined to applicants for menial roles either – many of the CVs riddled with errors were drafted by CEOs, professionals and recent graduates, the researchers from Personal Career Management said.
"Many of the people whose CVs end up in the waste paper bin are perfectly capable of doing the job. However, a poor CV means they will not get the opportunity to prove it.
"Why would anyone want to employ a lawyer or a secretary who makes spelling mistakes or errors? If they can't pay attention to their own CV, why would you trust them to work on any of your documents?" Corinne Mills of PCM was quoted by 'The Daily Telegraph' as saying. It seems no one is above mistakes!

Swine Flu - Travellers - BEWARE !!

The World Health Organisation is not recommending any travel restrictions to contain an outbreak of swine flu that has killed people in Mexico and spread around the world.Countries worldwide have ramped up their border and airport checks and many are advising against non-essential travel to areas where the virus has been found, especially Mexico where it has proved most deadly.Following are the health concerns related to air travel, and guidance from the WHO and the international airlines body IATA about how travellers should stay safe and what carriers should do to reduce disease transmission risks:

WHAT SHOULD TRAVELLERS DO?

-- Wash hands frequently

-- Avoid contact with sick persons

-- Avoid contact with live animals in markets

-- Consult with doctor before travelling if ill


DOES VIRUS SPREAD ABOARD AIRCRAFT?

Germs can circulate in plane cabins, although IATA says that modern aircraft have advanced filtration systems which have markedly improved the level of on-board air quality.WHO experts have previously said that transmission risks for diseases such as tuberculosis are only highly acute on flights lasting more than eight hours, and for people sitting within five rows of an infected person.


WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMEONE FALLS ILL DURING A FLIGHT?

Airlines are instructed -- in rules that predate the swine flu outbreak

-- to take action if a passenger or crew member has a fever of 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher, as well as one of the following symptoms:

-- Appearing obviously unwell

-- Persistent coughing

-- Impaired breathing

-- Persistent diarrhoea

-- Persistent vomiting

-- Skin rash

-- Bruising or bleeding without previous injury

-- Confusion of recent onset

In such cases, protocol dictates that airline staff call for medical support from ground support or among the passengers, and then follow the doctor's instructions.If no medical support is available, the airline would then:

-- Relocate the sick person to a more isolated area

-- Designate a cabin crew to look after the sick person

-- Designate a lavatory for exclusive use of sick person

-- Ask sick person to wear surgical mask or use airsick bag

-- Store soiled items (such as tissues, pillows, blankets, linen, seat pocket items) in biohazard bag-

- Ask accompanying travellers if they have similar symptoms

-- Ensure hand-carried cabin baggage follows the passenger

-- Report suspect case to captain and air traffic control

-- Ask all travellers seated in the same row, two rows in front and two rows behind the sick traveller to complete a passenger locator card

How does weather affect the spread of flu?
Weather experts are studying swine flu to see if climate could influence its spread and severity.
Determining the impact of cold, heat, dryness and humidity on the H1N1 strain -- which has killed up to 149 people in Mexico and had milder effects elsewhere -- could illuminate the countries and regions most vulnerable to infection.
Climate information may also provide clues into whether the virus is likely to return year after year on a seasonal basis.
Following are details about seasonality of regular flu, and the weather and other factors affecting its patterns, according to data from the World Health Organization, World Meteorological Organization, and leading scientists:
COLD AND DRYNESS
Flu incidence peaks in the winter season in temperate parts of the world, generally described as areas outside the tropics.
Cold and dry conditions help the virus survive outside the body, meaning that droplet particles take longer to evaporate and remain airborne for more extended periods in winter.
HEAT AND HUMIDITY
Influenza outbreaks do occur in the tropics, though less frequently than in areas with less heat and humidity, and without the seasonality seen in areas with wintry weather.
Poor laboratory and health data, especially from Africa and Latin America, have made it difficult for international experts to track viral transmission in tropical regions.
SCHOOL CYCLES
School cycles have also been shown to affect the seasonality of flu. Winter school breaks tend to reduce flu transmission to children by as much as 25 percent, mainly because they provide fewer opportunities for the virus to spread among large groups.
OTHER FACTORS
The precise strain of virus circulating, which can change from flu season to flu season, can also affect how virulent it is and how many people may fall ill in a given outbreak. The levels of immunity in the population, vaccination programs, hygiene practices and other practices also play a role.

U.S. health officials predicted worsening outbreaks of the new H1N1 flu on Thursday, and a top global health official predicted up to a third of the world's population could eventually become infected even as Mexican officials said the worst was over.
A batch of detailed studies on the new swine flu virus showed it was a strange marriage between a triple-hybrid virus with pig, human and bird elements and a European swine virus not seen before in North America.
Mexico's confirmed death toll ticked up to 44 as labs tested a backlog of samples from people who died in March and April. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 896 confirmed cases of the new H1N1 flu in 41 states.
U.S. officials have said they expect the swine influenza virus to spread to all 50 states and to cause many infections ranging from mild to severe. There have been two deaths in the United States.
"So far we are not seeing any signs of this petering out," acting CDC Director Dr Richard Besser said. "We are on the upswing."
More than 2,000 people in 24 countries have been infected with the virus, the World Health Organization said.
The WHO's Dr. Keiji Fukuda urged Asian governments to stay alert for a possible wider pandemic that "could infect a third or more of the world's population in the next several months, in the next year.
"Even if the illnesses appear relatively mild on an individual level, with large numbers of infections on the global population, you can get large numbers of seriously ill people," Fukuda told a conference in Bangkok.
Fukuda said H1N1 flu is not yet spreading in a sustained way outside North America, so the global pandemic level remains at 5 out of 6.
"As recent events suggest, the generation of novel influenza viruses through the reassortment of swine influenza viruses with other human and animal influenza viruses may be inevitable," the CDC's Dr Lyn Finelli and colleagues wrote.
So far the genetic analysis gives no clue about where the new virus came from, the researchers told a news conference. The European genes were especially mystifying. "Those genes had never been seen in the United States before," the CDC's Dr Michael Shaw said. "We have no idea whether they came to this hemisphere by human or animal."
BACK TO SCHOOL
In Mexico, millions of high school and university students returned to classes as the country got back on its feet after shutting public places last week to avoid spread of the disease.
After a five-day business shutdown, the government has let bars, cinemas, restaurants and workplaces reopen. Theme park operator Six Flags said it planned to reopen its Mexico City park on Friday after being given permission by Mexico's government to do so.
But visitors to government-run buildings were asked to wear surgical masks and wash their hands with antibacterial soap before entering. Restaurants also sanitized diners' hands as they arrived.
The U.S. pork industry got some good news after being battered by import bans by nearly two-dozen countries.
"Clearly pork producers have suffered and will continue to do so until we get this turned around," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee. "We are looking at ways we can be of assistance or help.
And Russia signaled it may lift bans placed on pork by June 1, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative said. Russia, the fourth-largest export market for U.S. pork, has banned all meat from five U.S. states and banned raw pork from a few others. It has also banned pork from certain Canadian provinces, the United Kingdom and Spain.
How Swine Flu Spreads in Humans - from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
* Swine flu viruses typically cause illness in pigs, not humans. Most cases occur when people come into contact with infected pigs or contaminated objects moving between people and pigs.

*Transmission from human to human is thought to occur in the same way as with seasonal flu -- by touching something contaminated with flu viruses and then touching one's mouth or nose, and through coughing or sneezing. One of the most effective prevention measures is regular hand washing.

* Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to those of seasonal influenza -- sudden fever, coughing, muscle aches and extreme fatigue. This new strain also appears to cause more diarrhea and vomiting than normal flu.
* Vaccines are available to be given to pigs to prevent swine influenza. There is no vaccine to protect humans from swine flu, although the CDC is formulating one. The seasonal influenza vaccine may help to provide partial protection against swine H3N2, but not against swine H1N1 viruses like the one circulating now.
* People cannot catch swine flu from eating pork or pork products. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees Celsius) kills the swine flu virus along with other bacteria and viruses.
The Flu mask is not the ultimate tool to prevent Swine Influenza infection..Mostly just prevents you from spreading it to other ,if you've unwittingly caught it from somwhere ..

1918 Flu Pandemic


Swine influenza was first proposed to be a disease related to human influenza during the 1918 flu pandemic, when pigs became sick at the same time as humans.
The first identification of an influenza virus as a cause of disease in pigs occurred about ten years later, in 1930.

1997-2002 -- new strains evolved of 3 different Subtypes and 5 different Genotypes

1997-1998 -- H3N2 -- include genes derived by reassortment from human, swine and avian viruses-North America

1999 -- H4N6 -- crossed the species barrier from birds to pigs -contained on a single farm in Canada


The H1N1 form of swine flu is one of the descendants of the strain that caused the 1918 flu pandemic.As well as persisting in pigs,the descendants of the 1918 virus have also circulated in humans through the 20th century, contributing to the normal seasonal epidemics of influenza.However, direct transmission from pigs to humans is rare, with only 12 cases in the U.S. since 2005.


Till today though the exact origin of the 1918 strain remains elusive..
1976 U.S. outbreak


February 5, 1976 -- A/New Jersey/1976 (H1N1)- a U.S army recruit Fort Dix said he felt tired and weak. He died the next day and four of his fellow soldiers were later hospitalized. Two weeks after his death, health officials announced that the cause of death was a new strain of swine flu. The strain, a variant of H1N1, is known as A/New Jersey/1976 (H1N1). It was detected only from January 19 to February 9 and did not spread beyond Fort Dix.

Alarmed public-health officials decided action must be taken to head off another major pandemic, and urged President Gerald Ford that every person in the U.S. be vaccinated for the disease.


About 24% of the population, had received immunizations when three senior citizens died soon after receiving their swine flu shots and there was a media outcry linking the deaths to the immunizations, despite the lack of positive proof. There were also reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome,a paralyzing neuromuscular disorder, affecting some people who had received swine flu immunizations. This syndrome is a rare side-effect of modern influenza vaccines, with an incidence of about one case per million vaccinations.Less than 33% of the population had been immunized by the end of 1976. The National Influenza Immunization Program was effectively halted on Dec. 16.Overall, there were about 500 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), resulting in death from severe pulmonary complications for 25 people,the vaccine killed more Americans than the disease did.

In September 1988, a swine flu virus killed one woman in Wisconsin, and infected at least hundreds of others.
1998 US outbreak in Swine


In 1998, swine flu was found in pigs in four U.S. states. Within a year, it had spread through pig populations across the United States. Scientists found that this virus had originated in pigs as a recombinant form of flu strains from birds and humans. This outbreak confirmed that pigs can serve as a crucible where novel influenza viruses emerge as a result of the reassortment of genes from different strains.

In late April, an outbreak of a new strain of H1N1 Influenza, commonly called "swine flu", was detected in Mexico City. The initial spread of the virus appeared to be rapid - that, coupled with several deaths of young, otherwise healthy flu victims raised global awareness and initial alarm. As of today, Mexico has confirmed over 800 infections and 42 deaths resulting from H1N1 - 22 countries worldwide now have reported 1,516 cases of influenza A (H1N1).

Eating slowly could help you win the battle of the bulge. A study of more than 3000 Japanese adults published in the British Medical Journal found that those who ate their meals quickly were about twice as likely to be obese as their slow-munching counterparts.
People who ate quickly and who ate until they were full were three times more likely to be obese. The research supports previous evidence that people tend to consume more calories when they eat quickly, but also that eating quickly is linked to obesity regardless of how many calories are eaten.
Dr Elizabeth Denney-Wilson, an obesity expert, says research suggests people can learn to eat more slowly and recognize their internal cues for fullness. She adds that while it is not known what drives us to eat quickly, behaviour such as eating while distracted and eating fast food on the go may be to blame.
Setting aside meal times and chatting between bites can help slow the rate of eating and allow your body to send fullness signals before you’ve overeaten.

1)Grind some graphite power from a pencil. Using a knife, break the lead from a pencil into tiny pieces. Use a coin on a flat surface to grind the pieces into a fine powder.(You could even use some talcum powder.)
2)Sprinkle the powder onto your object. Lay the object on a flat table and gently coat the surface of the object with a fine layer of graphite powder.
3)Reveal the fingerprint. Lightly dust the powder off the surface with a feather. The powder will stay attached to the oils from the suspect's skin, and a fingerprint should take shape. Be sure to dust very lightly, or you may dust away the fingerprint.
4)Transfer the fingerprint. Holding a small strip of transparent tape at both ends, place the tape over the fingerprint. Press it down for a moment, then carefully pull the tape up from one end. The fingerprint will transfer onto the tape.
5)Place the tape face down on an index card. Repeat the process for each finger you can find prints for on the object, and place them on the same card.
